The Legend House of Summerlin Book 1 edition by Kathryn Le Veque Romance eBooks
I did not care for this book at all. I’m giving it 2 stars instead of one because the author wrote a book (something I will respect as not everyone can) and because there were lines here and there that were well written. That being said... the characters were horrible. The hero is a self absorbed jerk. He gets better towards the end but he even is abusive towards her before they are wed (threatening her, breaking furniture, raging) which, of course, he is instantly forgiven for. Thia is horrible and actually tries to kill Peyton twice.. which of course she is instantly forgiven for. The mom basically blames everything on Peyton, calls her horrible names and basically conveys her hatred. But of course, she is instantly forgiven and they all laugh like “oh there goes mom again”. The book was completely unbelievable. Even Peyton was annoying. Attacking everyone verbally and using their weight in insults. Not to mention she gets hit in the head three times to the point of passing out, with two of those times being passed out for over an hour. But, hey, she’s fine. And she is knocked out and drowned to the point of death, so that cpr is administered, but her pregnancy is unharmed. It was such a weird, unbelievable book with incredibly immature characters.

The Legend House of Summerlin Book 1 edition by Kathryn Le Veque Romance eBooks Reviews
This is an OK Medieval romance, but it was hard to like the H. He was a total jerk to the h several times -- and when she stood up to him, he threatened her (not with violence, but with other punishments that would have made her life miserable).
I know it was typical of the time period for women to be considered possessions, and often treated very badly. But Alec was always thinking he loved Peyton, then immediately doing or saying something that hurt her deeply. He often treated her as if she was an idiot, who needed his help in making the smallest of decisions.
This could have been a very good book. It was just too hard for me to believe that Peyton could fall in love with a man who treated her good one minute and bad the next.
This is the first book of Ms. LeVeque's that I have read. It was a special purchase from BookBub and I am very glad that I took advantage of the offer. It is a terrific story and the characters are very real. There is a serious issue in the book about race that is addressed with grace and care. I agree with one of the reviewers that it was a little odd that the sister reversed her opinion so quickly, yet it was sweet for the story. I liked all the rest of the story and it definitely held my attention. I do think that she needs a better editor because there were too many errors in missed words, words in wrong order and misplaced words. If that had not been the case, I would have given this a 4.5 stars. Other than that, I recommend this book for others to read.
This is the story of a Knight of the realm who fought during the Crusades. His skill as a tactician and fighter has earned him the title The Legend. Unfortunately, during the last battle, he accidentally kills his older brother. As a result, he lays down his sword and refuses to fight with it any longer. The entire British realm is unable to understand and he is labeled a coward. He and his brother in arms return home where they both pick up the pieces of their lives.
There is a very uncomfortable issue in this story. The heroes best friend is a black man. The two have grown up together, and Ali, while he was permitted to train as a knight, could not be invested because the Chrich preached that black people were not human; could not make the vows of investiture, and thus was not a knight. I have to admit that my religion has a lot to answer for, since this resulted in the white man's justification for enslaving the people kidnapped from Africa and probably the segregation demeaning, and slavery of those individuals and their treatment today.
I did feel that though the story was very interesting, held my interest until the end, I had a very hard time understanding how Ivy (the younger sister) could so easily go from refusing to be married to a black man, who wasn't human, to a woman completely enamored with him and hie parents.
Other than that, the story moved quickly with lots of angst and development of the characters. I chose this book because I had a weak memory of her name and having enjoyed her books in the distant past.
I really hate to write a bad review, but the characters were so annoying whenever they interacted. The Legend here is Alec, 32 years old and touted as the greatest knight in Christendom, yet his parents treat him like a 3 year old, but then, that‘s how he acts. His father is a weak, submissive ditherer, his mother a shrew, either slapping or berating him in an era when she would have been punished for such disrespect. The two St. Cloven heiresses, well past marrying age, would surely know that husbands would be chosen for them once their father dies, leaving their rich and coveted demense in need of a defender. Evidently we’re to believe all their bickering, screeching, and slapping when they’re not referring to each other as “darling“ was a way of life for noblewomen during that time. I could have had vertigo from all the emotional ups & downs seemingly put forth on every page I hate you/I love you, I hate you/I love you, I hate you/I love you; yikes. Sexual attitudes are grade school level, with giggles, innuendo, and very cloying silliness. The only people with any sense was Ali and his parents, and they are treated horribly by almost everyone simply because they’re black. The Church does not recognize their humanity, will not sanction marriages, or allow Ali to be knighted although he, too, fought for king and country during the Crusades. If that’s not enough, let’s throw in a lesbian and really villainous villains. I only hope I didn’t pay for this book.
