An excellent, well put together book, complete with maps and a glossary of Ojibway terms. The author helps the reader to come to a greater understanding of the wrongs done by whites in the decades long narrative, and that the story has not ended. The only negative comment I have to make is that the editors didn't catch the frequent confusion of the verbs "lie" and "lay," and perhaps did--or did not? realize that the use of the word "Episcopal" as a noun (e.g. "the Episcopals") is considered by many of that faith as a put down. People who belong to the Episcopal Church are called "Episcopalians," not "Episcopals." I understand that such errors of speech are very small compared to the wrong things done to Native American tribes by white people, some of whom were misguided Episcopal priests.

An interesting book but a little disjointed in spots. I love that it dealt with mostly native women, their thoughts and lives. I sometimes felt that I would like to follow a certain characters life a bit more deeply and that the book jumped generations without much transition.
I do not know as much about Native American history and culture as I'd like. I enjoyed reading the stories of the people of White Earth.
There are no words to describe where reading of this journey has taken me. I deeply honor these people and their view of life, our ancestors and the earth
The book is initially challenging to follow. The individual stories are intriguing and thought provoking. It’s worth the read to gain insight into the history of a people.
This is one of the best books i have read and I read a lot !! A story not just for Native Americans but a beautiful, and emotional read of the people.
LaDuke tells the story of her people through the eyes of a few family's over many generations. I loved the characterization and the landscape I felt as though I walking through the woods and on the lakes and rivers - just a great read, a must !!
Interesting look at life as it has evolved on the reservation. As a retiree now living in AZ, the Native American culture is relatively new to me, and I particularly liked the insight into what life was once like for the ancestors. While we have clearly done a disservice to this group of people, it feels like the Tribal Council members are (while maybe not as bad as in this book) much more concerned about their own well-being and power than assisting their people to live a better life and still embrace their heritage. This book certainly did nothing to dissuade me from that view.
The Last Woman Standing tells the story of one tribe of Native Americans. While the first few chapters confused me and left me wondering what one had to do with another, when they avidly wove together, it was like seeing the pieces of a patchwork quilt become a whole.
